Twin Separation Anxiety - Day One

For the first time since late June 2008, when we brought Sarah home after an extended stay in the Special Care Unit, she and Matthew have beds in separate rooms. After disassembling Matthew's youth bed (formerly a crib) and reassembling it in the next room, he and Braden, now 10 months, are now roommates, and Sarah has their old room to herself. We've officially gone to "the boys' room" and "the girl's room".

The shift is not due to any issues with gender differences. No Victorian era concerns over modesty or pink and blue battles. The move became necessary when Kristine and I evolved the twins' cribs into toddler beds. Matthew and Sarah, no longer bound by their enclosures, took each opportunity to run wildly into the wee hours with all sorts of noise. When one would fatigue, they would clash, leaving the loser with bite marks to prove it. This wasn't sustainable.

Matthew's Bed Is Now Cornered In Braden's Room

Looking at our options, we could move Matthew and Braden in a room, Sarah and Braden in a room, or sacrifice the space in my office to put one kid. Clearly the last was ruled out with no discussion. Meanwhile, Sarah would enjoy bunking with Braden FAR too much. No doubt she would be delighted to play with him and more often than not, would probably prefer to spend the night in his crib beside him, which promises no sleep for either.

Matthew, on the other hand, is a better sound sleeper, and may not be awakened by Braden's occasional cries. He knows how to sleep in his own bed, and won't be tempted to tear the books in the bookshelf to shreds, unlike our female offspring. So tonight, for the first time, he's sleeping soundly in "the boys' room", while Sarah gets used to her emptier surroundings.

Sarah's Got All This Space. Now What?

Meanwhile, tonight, as the pair came to realize what had happened, they were told to say goodnight and give each other their goodnight kiss. As Matthew embraced Sarah and gave her a kiss, he looked her in the eye like a friend who would be gone for years and said, "Goodbye Sarah." Sarah looked him back in the eye, and said quickly, "Bye Matthew". It's just not fair. They're too cute. I hope future posts aren't filled with regret over the move.

  1. Sarah looks forlorn. How did the first couple of nights go?

  2. Night one was a breeze. Sarah, after examining the changing table and diaper bins (moved to her room for now), went to bed. Matthew used the opportunity to open and close the door to ask to use the potty - a perfect use.

So far, the only downside is that Matthew still likes to sleep on the floor, so putting Braden in bed, or getting him when he cries, now runs the risk of stepping on Matthew or breaking my neck and dropping Braden. I just gave Braden some milk around midnight and stepped around Matthew and put both back to bed.

  3. Congratulations on this great advance! It had to happen some time. I trust the novelty will wear off rapidly and both twins will benefit.
